Lemon vs. Chocolate Malt

Every month the Hummingbird Bakery, which is one of my favourite cupcake shops EVER, creates two new, special edition cupcakes.  Every month, these cupcakes go head-to-head, battling it out for the number one spot.

June 2014 has seen the rivalry of two delicious cupcakes: Lemon vs. Chocolate Malt.  One is a light lemon sponge, smothered in a zesty lemon frosting; the other is a rich chocolate sponge, topped with a freshly whipped layer of malty chocolate frosting and crushed Maltesers.  But which cupcake deserves the number one title this month?

This zesty lemon cupcake with its soft, fresh lemon sponge and zingy lemon frosting was absolute lemony perfection.  I absolutely adored the sugary mini lemon treat on top of the cake, which gave some indication of what was to come.  Each mouthful was filled with a beautiful citrus flavour, which was so perfect for the hot summer sun.  The sponge was so light in flavour, that it made the flavoursome frosting complementary, rather than over-powering.  I can not overemphasise just how good the frosting was, as it was by far the best part, so it is lucky it comes in abundance!  It had a good, strong flavour to it, whilst retaining its thick, creamy texture.  I genuinely could not get enough of this wonderful lemon cake, and I will be back to pick up a batch of these beauties to enjoy in the hot summer sun!

Chocolate Malt Cupcake

Maltesers are one of my absolute favourite chocolatey treats that I never bore of indulging in time and time again.  So to say that this cupcake was a disappointment would be an understatement.  The classic chocolate sponge was as wonderful as ever, however, the use of milk chocolate rather than dark chocolate in the frosting seemed to be the first stumbling point.  I am aware that Maltesers are made with milk chocolate, but something really did not work with this milk chocolate frosting.  The crushed Maltesers also added nothing to the cupcake.  There was no crunch, just the soggy remains of my favourite part.  There was no ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ Malteser goodness that I was expecting with this cupcake.

Therefore, I can happily announce that the delicious Lemon Special Edition Cupcake is June’s Great Hummingbird Bake-off winner.
